CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO
POLICY ON EXTERNAL USE OF
ENROLLED STUDENT MAILING LISTS
RECOMMENDED BY ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL:
December 13, 1999
APPROVED BY PRESIDENT KARNIG:
December 16, 1999
RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT:
Office of Vice President for Student Affairs, 909/880-5185
Background
This is a revision of the 1987 policy because
of a change in the federal education Rights and Privacy Act.
The university periodically receives requests
for mailing lists of names and addresses and phone numbers of our enrolled students.
The range of requests include national and community businesses and organizations,
agencies of the federal government, and the Armed Forces. These requests are couched
in the offering of scholarships, prizes, awards, publications, general advertising and
other promotions.
Policy
It is the policy of California State
University, San Bernardino, not to provide or sell lists of enrolled students to any
businesses, organization or agency external to the University. An exception is
federal military recruiting. Access to student information continues to be provided
in accordance with the federal Education Rights and Privacy Act, the Solomon Amendment and
on an individual need-to-know basis. Further, when the University does permit
access, it does not knowingly release information which would be used for commercial
purposes. A request for an exception to the policy may be made to the Vice President
for Student Affairs.
