NO SMOKING POLICY

APPROVED BY ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL:    March 8, 1993

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT:   Human Resources (Personnel Policies Manual #611)

Research has clearly proven that breathing second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) is a significant health hazard to smokers and non-smokers alike.

The Environmental Protection Agency classifies SHS as a "Class A" carcinogen.  Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, lists SHS as a human cancer-causing chemical.   The U.S. Surgeon General identifies SHS as the third leading cause of preventable death.  In reaction to the above, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will include SHS in their indoor air quality safe exposure level requirements.

CSUSB is committed to creating a safe, healthy and productive environment for its students, faculty, and staff.  Because SHS is one of the most widespread and harmful indoor air pollutants, CSUSB shall be completely smoke-free indoors.  This smoke-free policy shall apply to all CSUSB facilities, owned or leased, regardless of location.

Effective March 8, 1993, smoking will be prohibited in all spaces of all campus buildings and vehicles.

To ensure compliance, enforcement of this policy shall follow existing university disciplinary guidelines.
